The Big Smoking Frankenstein and a New Album

Oil, oil, oil is ruining the Gulf Coast! Arghh!

Hard to believe that the Deep Water Horizon well has been spewing for a month with no end in sight.

Reminds me of a big monster coming slowly, never ceasing, darkness and SCARY!

On a positive note, my new album "Dinosaur Bones" is 95% finished and should be released by August. This project has taken longer than any other. We started tracking in September of 2009!

I will be releasing singles in the coming weeks through CDBaby and iTunes.

Blabbermouth Gets Airplay in Japan - iTunes Ready- 9 miles and counting!

Wow, what a busy and productive year 2009 has turned out to be! We have released two new albums, "Blabbermouth" and "Color Theory" and are in the middle of three more! One is the next SR album which will most likely be a 2-CD package. It is quite a factory around here when the muse hits.

Thanks for the emails regarding Blabbermouth. Many have written me that this is the best SR CD yet and I am so grateful for your support. We have been getting a lot of love from our Japanese fans thanks to the airplay of "I See It" and "Grand Maybes"! Duane (my Japanese agent) and I are planning a tour soon, maybe in the Spring.

45 days after its release, iTunes has finally added "Blabbermouth" to their store which means it will also be available at all the other digital retailers. Get your iPods plugged in and order it today....:)

For the past eight years I have raced motorcycles in my off-time. The hardcore physical workout you get racing 60 to 100 miles through the woods with 300 equally crazed riders can't be matched. In early 2009 I decided to take a year off from racing (probably why I have been so musically productive this year). To make up for the lack of exercise I started jogging. The other day I hit a milestone as I made it nine miles. It's a great way to clear my head and requires no equipment but running shoes. Funny, you couldn't have paid me to run in my 20's, but now I'm hooked and do it nearly every day. My oldest son is about to compete in his first marathon, maybe some day I can do one with him, CRAZY!!

Weekend With a Movie Star

Last weekend we pulled two 12 hour sessions in the studio tracking drums on a mammoth project with 25 songs. On drums was Bomani (the drummer from the new album "Blabbermouth" which is due to be released soon).

It seems that Bomani had some scenes in the new movie "Final Destination 4" so after we wrapped up Saturday, we headed for the local theatre. Sure enough, he is in the very first scene in a coffee shop. Not only that, he's in the middle of the movie and the last scene too. He plays a coffee shop employee. I told him I was gonna stand up and tell the audience he was in the theatre but after watching his part, I'm sure they would have called out for espresso!

New Album BLABBERMOUTH is Finished!!!

Do you have any idea how much fun it is trying to decide on a name for an new album? We tossed around a bunch of different ideas before settling on Blabbermouth. This album is very exciting to me as a lot of great players helped (in fact there are around 15 at last count). So why call it Blabbermouth? While it's easy to write politically influenced songs, I have stayed away from that over the years. However, I have become sick of the mainstream media, who as I see it, sell fear, hyperbole and anxiety with a focus on bringing us down (appealing to the lowest levels). I believe the press helped nurture the negative vibe that has permeated our culture. That being said, these songs are funky, sing-a-long groove machines that you hopefully will love! Look for the release in July. Now how to tour with 15 musicians??!!! LOL!

Also in September, the world' busiest musician, Kasim Sulton will be here to produce the follow up to our 2006 release Unstoppable! Fresh from recording Meatloaf's new album and touring with Todd Rundgren, Kasim will hopefully not pass out from exhaustion! The songs are cool, quirky and upbeat. More news later!

Toys for Tots Benefit

Last Sunday I played a benefit biker rally for Toys for Tots with my brothers Donie Morgan and Greg Roth (aka Lucky Henry). It was a great day, perfect weather and a wonderful and appreciative crowd of over 1000! It was made even more special when my son joined us onstage playing drums on the biker anthem "Born to be Wild"

Lucky in Destin

Last week I played with my great friends Greg Roth and Donnie Morgan at an event to benefit a battered women's shelter in Destin. It was an award ceremony put on by a local entertainment newspaper to name the best in local musicians (you know, the type that play the local lounges etc.) Donnie was nominated as best drummer (from his short stint backing up a local blues player). If you've heard 90% of my recorded material in the past 10 years, you have no doubt heard DEMO's playing. He is a MONSTER (especially on our high octane material aka Lucky Henry). So, we were there to play a couple LH songs to a audience that had been fed all kinds of MOR covers (like Margaritville...ughh). Like most award ceremonies, this one was a who-do-you-know kind of affair and they had already picked and awarded the best drummer two acts before we played. As we got up on stage, I thanked (then warned) the audience that the fusion they were about hear might not go well with their chips and salsa. We ripped into two songs from our album Musical Chairs, "Audio Goo" and "Martian Conversation". We received a standing ovation from the previously subdued audience. Donnie surely set the bar high. When they asked us for an encore, we played "Chim Chim Cherie" (which is on Sounding Rick- "Live in Japan"). When we were finished playing, the small crowd went nuts. I think they realized that they had just heard the night's "best drummer". That being said, I don't think we will be invited back next year...LOL!

And then what???

Well since you asked.

I have the new album finished and being mastered by the great Jim LaForest at AudioVista. It should be popping out of the sonic oven any day. The next record's tracking is 2/3 complete and yes, there is another one coming. That makes three new projects in the works. Then there is the new Lucky Henry album we are working on. Thanks to my fans in Italy, gigs there should be forthcoming in 2009. I told the band to make sure they have their passports.

I have begun producing an album for a young group called Needless. Their tunes are cool and you can catch them in Austin, TX next month.

I broke my left foot last Saturday training for the last race of the season when I hit a stump....ouch! By Thursday the swelling went down enough to put my sneaker on loosely, I have never competed with a broken foot. As long as I can get my boot on......?

Looks like be touring in Japan again next October. One event we have booked is the Osaka Music Festival. More info to come.

I don't know about you but the press here at home has my head spinning. I am convinced that the mainstream media is a dark force looking to cause panic and fear. They have succeeded thus far in making my friends and neighbors anxious about the future, their jobs and their homes. I voted early. I hope my other American friends will vote too. Don't be swayed by the media, the press and the talking heads. Let your heart tell you where to put your check mark. Go vote next Tuesday. I can't wait till I can see commercials for Levitra and Viagara again without the Democratic spin machine telling me how wonderful Obama is and I look forward to watching the Daily Show when that giggling maggot has nothing to giggle about anymore....! Fini!

Having started on May 7th, I just finished mixing the last of 11 new songs for the new album.

I was worried that we might lose power with Hurricane Gustav coming ashore just a couple hundred miles west of us, but we did fine. Now it's on to the next project and some shows!

I'll keep you posted on the release date once we get the mastering and artwork completed.

More Tracking Days.....

I spent every day last week in the studio working on the new album with some great players. On the bass is my good friend Greg Roth. It's hard to believe that Greg and I have been working together for 14 years now! He has always been my go-to-guy when it comes to studio work. This week I also had Jim Andrews in to add some of his great sax work to the project. I think he will be on five of the songs. Also had the great singer Kathy Lyons and Burt Kimbrall in this week to do a quick side project. Since I am taking a few minutes to write, let me tell you about a funny movie I saw last night, "Hamlet 2". It's a comedy about a washed up actor who becomes an even worse high school drama teacher. He is told the drama department will be eliminated so he decides to put on his sequel to Hamlet. Funny and irreverent for sure. There were only three other people in the theatre! Pray for New Orleans and Louisiana! Gustav is coming fast and he's fired up!

Almost there from here!

Man, this is a lot of WORK! But it's really fun at the same time. I thought I would show you some pics of the guys at work the last few days. On top is Chris Gardner piano extraordinaire reading a chart yesterday. He is amazing when it comes improvising and understanding my wacky songwriting skills. Next, is Bomani during a late night session the other evening. He has a killer attack on the drums I am sure you will like when you hear him. I need a shave and a bowl of Captain Crunch!

Just a couple more 18 hour days in the studio and I will have the latest project in the can! However, I'm not alone on the mix, I have my buddy "Max the weiner dog" (see photo below) to keep my ears honest. This one will be a little different than the last project for sure. I am excited about the bottom on this one too (meaning the rhythm section) as I have been working with a drummer named Bomani from the Hello People.

Also, I'm in the middle of another Lucky Henry project with Donnie Morgan and Greg Roth that should be real cool. Then, there are the songs that I have been sitting on for a while that were supposed to be on the follow up to "Unstoppable" with my friend Kasim Sulton. I've just gotta let that hen out too! I feel like Michael Phelps only without the gold medals and TV time. My plate is full, just not with tasty yellow cereal!Hooray for the US Olympians!!!

Nothing to Do With Music

I have been busy arranging and writing lyrics for the new music I wrote in January and February. It was one of those periods where I couldn't stop writing. Almost like an uncontrollable sneeze.

So, what do I do when I need to decompress? I race! The above photo was taken at the AMA National Enduro in Forest Hill, LA last month. Had a blast and didn't even crash...LOL! I got on the podium with a 3rd in my class! Now it's back to the studio for the next round of sneezing! Stay tuned, there are many cool delvelopments in the works!

Dust in My Pocket

My momentary creative hibernation is over and now it's time to get back to work! I have begun putting the final touches on a new album that should be ready for release by Memorial Day. I am real excited about the new material and I hope you will enjoy it too.
It has been refreshing, this little break I have been on. I have hiked, biked, breathed and felt the warmth of good times. Some winters are easier than others and this was one of the colder ones. It is springtime in Florida as there is pine pollen all over my car already!

BTW, have you been paying attention to the pre-pre-pre-election coverage? It reminds me of how out of touch we are with the real issues. It's like the paparazzi chasing Britney on her way to a date with Joron Van Der Sloot, there's plenty to see but no substance....ughhh!
Anyway, I'm dumping the dust out of my pocket and filling it with guitar picks!

Todd Rundgren and Kasim Sulton

NOLA House of Blues

Last week I got to see Todd Rundgren and Kasim Sulton at the House of Blues in New Orleans. It was a great show, full of energy and an eclectic setlist from Todd's many albums. Jessie Gress was on guitar and Mike Urbano (Smashmouth) on drums. Don't miss this show!!!Although I hadn't seen Kasim since we finished mixing my record "Unstoppable", he was still the same great guy getting Debbie and me VIP seats. Afterwards, we went out for a late dinner, a cigar and some laughs at a cool Middle Eastern place across the street. After Kasim finishes his solo work in the early spring, we hope to start my next record together with him producing again. Maybe I can get him to do some solo shows in Japan next fall??Peace, Rick

What's Up?

I have been so busy since I got home from Japan that I haven't had any time to update my blog here.

Last Saturday night in Fort Walton Beach we held a benefit concert for 1 year old SBS victim Kaleb Schwade. We had a enthusiastic crowd of about 100 people. We had so many people help from musicians to businesses to individuals. Just to name a few, I want to thank John Giles from Leitz Music for donating the lights and sounds, my brothers in all things musical, Donnie Morgan and Greg Roth as well as the other artists that performed, Jo Fingers, Beach Mice, Thoughts of Yesterday and Lucky Henry (confusing?)...

Now that I am back from Japan, it's time to get on with the official release of my latest album "Living in the Acoustic Projects"!

I will be performing songs (with a special guest or two) from the new album at The Sound Coffee Haus in Fort Walton Beach, Florida http://www.chillfwb.com/. The show starts at 7PM. These small acoustic gigs are a lot of fun because they allow for interaction with the audience and give me a chance to share a little insight about the songs.

All proceeds from the sale of my new CD Saturday will go to support the Kaleb Fund set up for 1year old Kaleb Schwade who is a victim of SBS.

I hope you can make it for some good music and hot coffee by the fire!

Tuesday in Tokyo....What to wear to the Auto Show?

Today we had our last full day in Japan all mapped out. We were going to start at the John Lennon museum, have lunch, attend the Tokyo International Auto Show and have good Japanese dinner to celebrate our tour. Somehow Yoko decided that Tuesdays are good days to be closed (?) so the museum was out. We got directions to the auto show from the nice girl at the front desk. She told us the JR train ride would take about 40 minutes. It took over an hour and several transfers but we made it. This show is immense, probably the premiere auto show in the world as it happens every three years. Every car, truck and motorcycle manufacturer is presented there (except KTM). The future of the automobile is bright and shiny, powered by fuel cell technology. Small is in and if one man has anything to say about it, guys ill be dressing in red rubber skirts and yellow stockings (like he did...wha???). I shot so many pictures, I feel like a freelance photog for Car and Driver. After the show,we had a traditional Japanese meal in Tokyo and toasted our great fortune for having been blessed with such a wonderful trip, great audiences, new fans and friends and memories that will last a lifetime. No Gig Today So We Climbed a Mountain

After finishing my solo show at the Gazebo in Osaka, Mike, Jimmy and I boarded the bullet train for Fuji. It was dark when we arrived so they had no idea what was in store for them. When the sun came up, we hired a driver and began the long trek to the mountain. Because of recent snowfall we couldn't drive past the half way point so we got out and walked. I felt like we were on a National Geographic expedition. The wind was blowing about 40 knots and the paths were nothing but sharp volcanic stones. We hiked up to one of the three domes. This is one beautiful and spiritual place to say the least. I look forward to returning soon.

Blarney Stone - Craziness -Little Sleep - Acoustic...What???

Last night we played the last band-date in Japan at the Blarney Stone in Osaka. When my agent said he booked this date, I was a little confused. Would a pub crowd be open to original music? Would things devolve into a drunken bar brawl? I am happy to say that none of that happened. What did happen was a party started from the first song with the entire audience dancing in front of the stage. To make things more interesting is they were having a Halloween bash so people were arriving in all kinds of wild regalia. I lost count after four encores at the shows end and we had so much fun we stuck around till the early morning hours visiting. I knew I had an afternoon solo show so I needed to get some sleep. The solo at a cool cofee house called Gazebo show kicked off the release of my new album "Living in the Acoustic Projects" to the Japanese market. Everything went well and the reception to the new material was gratifying. After that it was off to the bullet train for a two-hour ride to Fuji where we intend on climbing Mt Fuji in the morning before heading to Tokyo and back home to the states. One last thing, I received an email that my dear friend and old songwriting partner Phil Platten is in a hospice with cancer and is not expected to make it beyond a couple of days. I called from here and spoke to him and told him that I sung our song "Putting Out a Fire on a Burning Bridge" today to which he said, "Don't ever put out that fire Rick". Nara-Nara-NARA!!!!!

Last night we played in Nara at a great venue called Neverland. This was my second time here and it was sort of a homecoming. Some of the tracks from last year's Live in Japan album were recorded here and last nights audience reinforced why. The fans in Nara are some of the nicest people I have ever played for and they love to ROCK! It was raining when we took the hour long train ride to Nara for sound check however, we had decided that we wanted to see the largest Buddha in the world which is also housed in the world's largest wooden structure. After a quick sound check and a few photos with a wacky girl group, we headed for the temple across town. When we played here last year I didn't gt a chance to see the surroundings because is was nightfall when we arrived. This time, I got to see the beautiful rolling hillsides which reminded me of PA. The temple was closing at 5pm so we only had about 15 minutes to blow though and take pictures. This thing is huge, the fingers are the size of a human, just awesome! After the quick tour we had time to grab a meal. Well, the other guys did as they chose a place that served only fried food, yuck! The show was a blast and we ran out of CDs, tshirts and posters as the fans lined up at the meet and greet. After we got back to the hotel we took a few minutes to post two songs from our show at Nagoya earlier in the tour. Kyoto and Vox Hall

Ask any touring musician and they will tell you that they live for the time they are on stage. Outside of those rare minutes, the time spent on the road can be about as exciting as watching the grass grow. Some opt to sleep the hours away between shows while others watch TV or surf the net, but not us. Every day we are trying experience as much Japanese culture as we can cram into the few hours we have before sound check and then the show. Today was no different. I am confident that we walked over 10 miles! We started on the bullet train to Kyoto then walked to Nijo Castle a 16th century wonder. The ornate interiors were pretty cool (definitely not Ikea...LOL). Nijo is also known for its' "Nightingale Floors" designed to warn of intruders. I wondered why the floors were so squeaky....! Also, while we were there, this young Japanese boy came up to me and introduced himself then proceeded to question me. He was reading the questions off a worksheet from English Class. It was a special moment as he tried out his second langage on me (see photo at top). The sprawling grounds took over three hours to navigate at which time we started to head towards the train station where I stored some of my things in a locker. The problem was, I couldn't seem to remember what train station I put them in. So after walking for hours I was rushing around trying to find not only the right train station (in a city the size of Chicago), but also the right locker!!! Oh, this was all within minutes of our scheduled sound check at the venue....yikes! We located my stuff and made our way to Vox Hall. What a cool venue! The room consists of several tears (balconies) of seats lifting up from the stage. After sound check we toured another shrine called the Yasaka Shrine. This is located in the Gion District of Kyoto. Guess how we ended up there? These guys (Mike and Jimmy) wanted to go to a traditional Japanese Tea served by Geishas! As we hard core rockers walked around looking for the elusive tea house (hmmm), we came upon the shrine by accident. The show was killer tonight. The band was as tight as ever and the other bands we shared the bill with were utterly phenomenal! The audience was really cool and we made some new friends. Tomorrow we head for Nara to do a show at the famous Neverland.
Yes, some other musicians might sit in their rooms as they wait for the ride to sound check. Some might sleep, some might read, but in the Sounding Rick Army, we walk miles and miles seeking tea with a Geisha girl. I think I'm gonna soak my feet! Peace, love and pass the Splenda! Rick

Sun Hall- Osaka

It sure was great to be back to the famed Sun Hall in Osaka. Some venues just hold a special place in my heart and this is one of them. If you're a football fan (like me) you know that some teams win just about every time they play in a certain stadium. I always chocked it up to being positive and having a winning spirit, (you know...confidence). Sun Hall is one of those stadiums. Like last year, the bands that opened for us are the cutting edge of the independent Japanese music scene. They just smoke from the start with hooky, power-laden songs (it's what rock n roll is all about). We made a bunch of new friends and look forward to the next visit. A Day Of Dichotomy (Past, Present, Future)

Like a great film, some places you visit reveal more of themselves the second or third time you see them. Some truths are easy to see, laying out in the open while others are mined by an openness to discovery. Hiroshima is one of those places that reveal themselves boldly. I mean who doesn't know about what happened there in 1945, right? Last year while I visited this city I was awestruck by how much green and growth there has been since that day (if you weren't aware, you'd never say, "this place was completely destroyed"). On this visit I was treated to the children's point of view which is one of respect and remembering. Every day Japanese school children come to the Peace Memorial Park to pay their respects by singing, praying and bringing huge strings of origami to the memorial. Going through the museum is sobering, but like some terrible things you have to see the bad to reinforce how you never want them to happen again. Here is this huge tragedy that is now peaceful and green. War sucks! About 30 minutes south of Hiroshima is the island of Mayajima. It is a sacred place with temples, shrines and huge wooded mountains. We were fortunate enough t arrive just before sunset so we got to see the place in the best lighting possible. We hiked up in to the mountains where all we heard were the deer and the wind. Breathtaking! On the two hour train ride back to prepare for tomorrow's show, I couldn't help but feel that I had spent the day in dichotomy, from destruction to rebirth, peace and the winds of hope.

Where's the Beef?............Kobe!

For you Sam Elliots out there we are please to announce that steak is on the menu tonight. As we go from city to city, we are trying to sample the culture that is uniquely their own. In Kobe it is their beef, without a doubt the finest I have ever tasted. They don't serve it in a steak but in thinly sliced strips. The portion sizes here in Japan are much smaller than in the states (makes sense). This place reminds me of Atlantic City mixed with Disney World with a huge dash of "the mall" thrown in. There are shops, mega stores, huge electric signs on the sides of buildings (10 stories high), restaurants and karaoke bars. Every few blocks the entire pattern is duplicated against the bold mountains in the background. The venue was first class with a world-class sound and light system. We made more new friends and played a great show. Tomorrow we have the day off which we will enjoy to the fullest! Peace, Love and pass the salad, Rick

Trains-Cabs-Feet-Stairs-Vibrations of the Road

Today we rode the bullet train from Tokyo to Nagoya through some of the most beautiful scenery you can imagine. From lowlands near the sea to lush hilly forests right passed the awesome (and spiritual) Mt Fuji. There was a festival going on here so we had a chance to experience the local culture up close.

The show was in a venue called Tightrope which unlike the Tokyo shows, was located on the fourth floor of a huge building. The bands/acts that open for us all are so varied, from DJ hip hop to hard core metal to pure pop and funk, our show is surrounded by an eclectic mix.

The crowd was enthusiastic and again showed their appreciation by singing along. I saw a lot of video and cameras being used so there should be some live material showing up from this show. After the set we had a chance to meet with the fans including three young navy guys from the states.

Tomorrow it's off to Osaka to begin the Kansai region part of the tour! Whew!

Another Great Night in Tokyo

Last night we played Yoyogi-Labo in Tokyo to a wonderful audience. The guys and I finally shook off some of the travel cobwebs and found our stride. The fans were again totally into the moment and the bands that opened for us were great as usual. I also had a chance to meet my friend Hiro who is a very respected singer/songwriter here in Japan and a good friend of Michael J Downey (my Japanese Rock Ambassador).

Today we hop the bullet train for the two-hour ride to Nagoya and our show at Tightrope. I will be posting some of our candid video here as soon as we stop long enough to edit....LOL!

Tokyo Show-Maplehouse

Just Flew In, and Boy, Are My Arms Tired

After arriving a day later than planned, I was met at the airport by Mike, Jimmy and our agent Duane for the long train ride to our hotel. Dropped the bags in the room and immediately headed to the train for a longer ride (in rush hour) to the other side of town to Maplehouse. Like some of the Japanese venues, Maplehouse is underground. The audience was great and we really appreciated their singing along to just about all the songs. Like before, the other acts we shared the bill with were really cool. Now, I must sleep! More tomorrow!

Benefit Show for Kaleb Schwade Victim of SBS

On Novmeber 10th I will be playing a benefit show for little Kaleb Schwade who was violently shaken by a daycare worker back in May. Kaleb sustained brain damage and is now blind and deaf. This has truly affected my family as Kaleb is my Niece's son. I hope you will come and support me as we help Kaleb and raise awareness of SBS. Meet the Band!

We have been so busy lately that I almost forgot to introduce you all to the band that will be going to Japan next month. (see photo above: (L/R me-Jimmy-Mike). On drums is the great Mike Cusamano who has played with some of the same people that I have for many years, (yet we did not meet until 2006). Mike has a powerful, groove style of playing that is exciting to listen to and watch! If you've never heard of Jimmy James (bass), you might have led a sheltered life. Jimmy is not only a great bassist and vocalist for the likes of Tommy Tutone (remember 8-6-7-5-3-0-9?), he has also played with Bad Company, Animotion and White Lion. When he's not touring with Tommy Tutone, Jimmy is busy playing around the globe as a solo artist, (in fact, I think he's on his way to Belgium and Germany next week before we set off for Japan). Mike and Jimmy toured in Istanbul together right out of high school and have remained close friends ever since so the rhythm section is as tight as ever. Funny how things happen isn't it? I am excited about how good the band sounds and you wont want to miss these shows! Look for U.S. and European dates in early 2008!

Solo US Shows- Besides the one solo date in Osaka next month, my agent is busy booking several solo dates around the southeast for November through February in support of my new CD, "Living in the Acoustic Projects". Hi everybody! I know it has been a couple weeks since I last updated the blog. I have been busy down in Tampa rehearsing for the tour which kicks off October 18th in Tokyo. The band is really sounding great and these guys are fun to work and hang out with. I will be heading back for more next week and will post some pictures.

Ah Summertime!

Over the past year I have been couped up in the studio more than I care to remember, but last week I had a chance to pay a visit to Columbus, Ohio! As any musician that plays Columbus can tell you, they are some of the best audiences in the US! The air had zero humidity and the temps were in the low 60's at night, awesome! My youngest son was born in Columbus too so that makes it even more special.

Living in the Acoustic Projects (LITAP) is to be released very soon and the band and I are set begin rehearsals for the Japan tour. In the meantime, enjoy your friends and family and get some air!

Japan Tour Dates Announced

Hi everyone! I just returned from a little break in the musical mayhem that is thankfully my daily life.
Some of you may know that I relax by racing my dirtbike in about 10 grueling enduros each year. The last three (or four) weeks have been a welcome blur of fun. Two weeks ago I was riding in a 24 hour hare scramble in Maplesville, Alabama as part of a six-man team. I can't begin to describe the thrill of racing though the woods at 2:30 in the morning in dust so thick you can't see your front wheel! Last weekend I raced in Arkansas and I am happy to say that the racing is over! Now, back to music....
My agent has booked a Japan tour for late October and I have some of the dates to post here: October 18 at Maplehouse in Tokyo, October 19th in Yokahama, the 20th at Tightrope in Nagoya, the 24 at Sun Hall in Osaka, the 25 at Vox in Kioto, 26 Neverland in Nara and October 27 at The Blarney Stone in the Umeda section of Osaka. I will be a guest on a radio program in Osaka on Sunday the 21st.
We are just wrapping up the cover art for my next album "Living in the Acoustic Projects" the release date has been moved back a couple of weeks. I just heard a bit of it yesterday and it is a nice change-up from my more-produced material.

Notes from the Driven
Wow, this has been a crazy few weeks to say the least. Two weeks ago I drove 22 hours to east Texas and back for my 13 year old son and I to ride in a 65 mile enduro through tight (and hot) woods. Then it was off to Tampa for two days of rehearsal for a Wednesday show with my good friends George Valaes and Mike Cusamano. The event was a corporate party on St Pete beach and was a great time. Had a chance to share a good cigar and some laughs afterwards. Got back home on Thursday then left Saturday morning for Mississippi and another race yesterday. In case you haven't figured it out, when I can find the time, I race dirtbikes with my son (about 10 to 12 races per year). It really keeps me sane and in good health. Next Sunday we race an enduro in Alabama then a 24 hour race the following weekend then a 100 mile enduro in Arkansas the weekend after that. Can you say sore butt?! Through all of this I have begun tracking the first song with Chocolate Perry for the next album. We are doing this one long- distance and using the wonderful advancements in recording technology and the internet as he is in Miami and I am not. Chocolate did a Bee Gees record this way between the US and England years ago so I have faith in the process. The release date for my new CD "Life in the Acoustic Projects" has been moved to June 18th. I hope you all like it. Almost forgot to say that another tour of Japan is being scheduled for October 18 and the 29th. Right now it looks like we will be playing Tokyo, Yokahama, Osaka, Nagoya, Nara and Kobe. Life in The Machine

Hi everybody!

With the recent release of "Live in Japan" I have been able to turn my full attention to completing my upcoming acoustic record which is now going to be called "Living in the Acoustic Projects". As of this writing it looks like it is going to be a 14 or 15 song CD and it is now in the hands of mastering guru Jim LaForest at AUDIOVISTA in California. Look for the CD in about 30 days...

So, now what am I going to do? You may remember that I was supposed to be working on the follow up to "Unstoppable" with Kasim Sulton and Prairie Prince in April but schedules once again became a problem, so that has been put off till the fall. In the meantime, those songs needed a new producer and I am pleased to announce that George "Chocolate" Perry has agreed to produce some of the new material.

Chocolate has worked with some great people like John Mellencamp, Joe Walsh, Bobby Caldwell Crosby Stills and Nash, Don Felder, Neal Young, Gwen Mcrae and the Bee Gees. I am looking forward to working with him and it should be really cool!

In two weeks I am off to Tampa to work with a guy I started in this business with in high school, bassist George Valaes and the great drummer Mike Cusamano. This is a one-off gig but will surely be a blast. In fact, the three of us have plans to do some recording together before the year is out.

Did I mention that I have also begun recording the follow up to Lucky Henry Musical Chairs? Oh, and that I played 18 holes of golf yesterday with my 75 year old dad (who beat me) and then rode my mountain bike 20 miles? Crazy busy!

Severe Thunderstorms and Live Radio = FUN

Last night I was a guest on The Blue Plate Special radio show in Pensacola, Florida. The host Greg Guzman has been an ardent supporter of my various musical projects and last night was no exception. As you may know I just released "Live in Japan" last week and Greg dedicated the entire program to playing every track.

The night started out crazy with a huge line of severe thunderstorms, hail and even tornadoes in the area. I had to drive through blinding rain for over an hour just to reach the station. Upon entering I found out the the station's air conditioning was not working so we got to sit amongst lights, amps and other electronic broadcast equipment (can you spell HOT).

Not a problem though. We had a good time, gave away a few CD's to callers and managed to get through it. Thanks to all the callers to the show and their kind words.

Recently I saw where my friend Kasim Sulton has been posting candid backstage video of the current Meatloaf tour so I thought it would be fun to show you all what it is like to be a guest on a radio show. It's Here!

Just as promised, a huge shipment of Live in Japan CD's has arrived from the factory on time and ready to go! If you have already ordered yours, they are in the mail on their way. If you haven't, you can click on my store link now or get one from CD Baby or iTunes in about one week.

Live in Japan sounds great and captures the vibe of the entire tour.

Just about finished mixing the acoustic record. It is going to be pretty cool with a broad range of material (all acoustic of course). I have been thinking about changing the name of the CD so stay tuned.

I was all set to go see my good friend Kasim Sulton on his tour with Meatloaf tomorrow but it seems that Meat has the flu so the date has been postponed. Performing is a blast but it can take a lot out of you.

Off to Mexico

Next week I will be in Mexico where I will get to jam with my big brother Rusty who is a great singer/songwriter/guitarist. He will be adding his touch to some tracks on the upcoming acoustic record while we're there and it will be great to have him be a part of one or more of my songs! He is one of my heroes!

The other day I had a telephone conversation with my old songwriting partner and dear friend, Phil Platten. Phil and were in Portable People together (which is where we both had our first single released). One of the songs we recorded back in the 80's was killer piece Phil wrote called "Putting Out a Fire on a Burning Bridge". After 20 years, I am pleased to announce that it will be on "Free Energy".

Sneak Preview

In about two weeks Live in Japan will be released. This record was recorded at our shows in Osaka, Nara, Kobe and Nagoya, Japan in October 2006. Copies will be available at the website as well as CD Baby and iTunes. I still plan on releasing a companion DVD as soon as I have time to edit the video (after I mow the lawn, change the oil, finish the acoustic record and read War & Peace).

How Busy Am I?

Well since you asked, I'll tell you. I am waiting for the last tweaks on the master for the Live in Japan CD from my buddy Jim Laforest at AUDIOVISTA and Anthony (the art director) has the cover layout about 1/3 complete. It looks like its going to be a little different from what I posted here earlier but very cool nonetheless. Release date now looks like somewhere between March 15th-31th.

The acoustic project is just about completely tracked and it should still be out by the end of April.

Unfortunately, my working with Kasim Sulton and Prairie Prince on the follow up to "Unstoppable" has been postponed till the fall due to Meatloaf's tour and Prairie's schedule. If we can get together, that project will be well worth the wait. In the meantime, I am moving forward on the Unstoppable follow-up with another producer, so look for that release in mid summer.

We are also working on a tour of Europe and Japan as well as several festivals in the states. Busy but loving it!

Fun with the Boys

I had a great time last Saturday night playing a short set at The Sound in Fort Walton Beach. The event was a CD release party for the new record "Musical Chairs" which I recorded with my good friends Donnie Morgan and Greg Roth. Busy, Busy, Busy

Finally finished mixing the live tracks for the upcoming "Sounding Rick- Live in Japan CD" and now they are in the hands of my friend and mastering guru, Jim Laforest at AudioVista in California. I had to take some time away from the project to come back with fresh ears and the holidays presented the perfect break. One of the challenges is taking performances from different cities and venues and making them sound good.
Now, my faithful engineer Paul Williams and I are busy working on the upcoming acoustic record, "Free Energy". As it stands, it looks like there will be about 10-12 songs with just me and my acoustic guitar. It will be a nice change. In April, the follow-up to "Unstoppable" begins production with one of the nicest guys in show business, Kasim Sulton producing and the great Prairie Prince on drums (schedules permitting) . And keep your eyes on the new website for great new features!

It's Alive!!!

By now you know that the new website is up and running. Web guru (drummer and good friend) Mike Cusamano brought the noise to this design for sure! Thanks Mike!! We tried to make this new design a lot of fun and something you will want to visit often. It's The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year!

Yesterday I played four holiday shows at various nursing homes throughout the local area. It has been a great year full of exciting events, tours, records and more but yesterday was really special! Many of the residents of these facilities have nobody and spend their time staring out windows (or worse). Without fail, each person we talked to after the hour-long performance, was happy we came and told us so. Many were in tears as they heard Christmas songs that hit home. The day was also special because I had my son on drums and my good friend Greg Roth on bass. I urge you to reach out to someone this holiday season. BTW, the title above is one of the songs we played (in 3/4 time)!

After what seemed like endless hours in the studio, Musical Chairs is now shipping!

The writer went on to say how disgusted he was when Tony Clifton did his routine. But what is funny is how even now 22 years after his death, Andy Kaufman's brilliant lounge singer character Clifton (Bob Zmuda), is still catching audiences off-guard. Passing of a Dear Friend

When I returned home from being out of town yesterday I got a call from the wife of an old friend of mine with news that he passed away on Saturday.

Paul Spanton (aka B.P. for "Big Paul") was the bass player in my band in Philadelphia back in the late 1980's. But he became more than that, he was like a brother. BP was from England and I will never forget his unique sense of humor. He enjoyed a good glass of wine and restoring vintage BSA's. He was a connoisseur of fine things. As long as I knew BP, he never had an official "day job", yet he managed to find enough work to buy a house. He taught me how to make Shepard's Pie one cold, snowy evening in Philly. I still have the Bella Bartok piano book he gave me for Christmas one year and the 37 Gretsch he sold me "cheap". He was a true friend who championed my music. I often sent him songs before I released them to get his stamp of approval.
Paul was an accomplished musician who played bass and piano. After I got the news, I sat back and had so many great memories of our years together. Paul is survived by his lovely wife Karen.
I love him and miss him already.

Back Home in the USA!!!
米国の背部家!!!
After eight shows, 30-plus hours in the air, 20,000 miles, countless train, subway, bullet train and taxi rides, we are back from the Unstoppable Tour of Japan.
As I attempt to get my balance back from the jet lag, I am still vibrating from the wonderful Japanese audiences we played for. You truly know how to have fun!
There were so many great Japanese bands we met and shared the bill with at different venues (Bright Act,Mother’s Milk, The Stratos, Since 1969, Re:ing, Orange Stones, GEAR, Storm Rider, Orchid Void, The Super Black Market, Sonic Lemonade Message, Idio-Gram and Spark). The music scene in Japan is on fire with great new talent just waiting for an audience. I hope to help several of these bands get some attention here in America.
I just want to again say thanks to Donnie Morgan and Jim LaBerge for all their efforts making my music sizzle and spark. Special thanks go to the multi-talented Duane Levi at Shalestone Music for handling everything from the bookings and sound to "the handle" on my road case! I hope to work with Duane again soon on the next tour of Japan.
Now the work starts on reviewing the audio mixes from every show and the over 15 hours of video we shot for the upcoming Live in Japan CD and DVD!
Then there’s the next Sounding Rick album set to begin production as soon as my buddy Kasim Sulton comes up for air from the new Meat Loaf "Bat Out of Hell III" and New Cars "Road Rage" tours.
It’s going to be a busy end to 2006!

Final Show of Japan Tour

Played a solo show at Tin's Hall in Osaka last night to a appreciative crowd. Instead of attempting to perform with backing tracks from my iPod I opted to do it the old fashioned way, guitar-vocals. It was very refreshing.

Again I met many nice fans and enjoyed the brief meet and greet after the show before heading back to the hotel for some much needed sleep.

Tomorrow it's time to fly back home to the US. and 14 hours in the air aghhhh!!!

I Hear The Train a Comin'...

Hello from beautiful Nagoya! Just played the first solo show tonight to a good audience. It was different playing without the energy of the band but solo shows allow for more intimacy with the audience. This was my first gig using the iPod for backing tracks (kind of like karaoke for Apple scruffs). As you can imagine it created some tense moments.
Like every other show I have done in Japan, there were tremendous local bands on the some bill opening for me.
One killer band from Tokyo called "Idio-Gram" rocked the venue with a very original sound. Another cool band was Spark. More new friendships were made tonight.
Yesterday was awesome to say the least! Once my drummer and bass player were on their way to the airport I took the two-hour, 180 mph bullet train to Mt Fuji! It was rainy when we arrived so we hired a cab to take us to see some other local points of interest. We stopped at an ancient temple/shrine in the center of a city nearby before heading into the mountains and most beautiful waterfall I have ever seen.
This morning we were blessed to see Mt Fuji in all her glory...WOW!!!
Then we headed to the train station to meet my manager Duane in Nagoya. Unfortunately, some poor soul decided to jump in front of the train ahead of us stopping the entire rail line for over two hours!

Two Great Nights!

I just finished the last date with the band and will now get a break for two days before the tour picks back up again with a solo show on Wednesday in Nagoya. It is hard to keep coming up with words that convey the wonderful experience Japan has been. Last night we played in Nara at Never Land (no Michael Jackson here). We were told by another band that the venue is family owned and that they treat musicians with great respect and even feed you. Guess what, when we walked in the dressing room, they had delicious rice balls and grilled chicken on a stick for us. The bands that opened for us where again very tight and original. One that stood out was Paper Cup (see picture). Another band with a killer female drummer! Tonight we played in the beautiful city Kobe (home of Kobe beef) at Urban Square to a fired-up crowd and again had great bands on the bill!
I want to say thanks to my main brother Donnie for providing his trademark beat-smoke! The crowds went crazy for his drum solos and his vocals were spot on! And what can I say about Jim Laberge on bass? This guy was a godsend being so good and available at the same time (not everyone can take off to Japan with 30 days notice).
I also want to take a moment to thank my manager/agent here in Japan Duane Levi with Shalestone Music, for putting this all together. Not only is he a great sound engineer and fluent interpreter, he is also a musician and a first class gentleman to boot! The guy knows how to mix FOH and even put a new recessed handle in my flight case!!!
We have every show filmed and the mix recorded (thanks to Jim Laforest, Presonus and Sweetwater) as well as tons of great footage in the can. The "Sounding Rick Live in Japan" DVD is gonna rock!

Tour News

Last night was another cool venue. Four bands opened for us and all of them were really great. The Japanese musicians we are seeing are all very good. The venues have all had excellent sound and staff. Two groups we performed with last night that stood out are Orange Stones and Re:ing. Orange Stones is a three piece band with a girl drummer who is just killer. Watch out for them as they plan on coming to the US in the near future as I have agreed to produce their next record. Another cool group was Re:ing, a three piece band with a really good frontman (nice voice). Donnie, Jim and I have been having a blast with the audiences and musicians.
Gotta go do a radio interview and catch the train to Nara for tonight's show.

Going Great in Japan

Yesterday was a whirlwind day here on the Unstoppable Tour of Japan. We played the famous Sun Hall in Osaka last night to one of the most appreciative and joyful audiences I have ever had the pleasure and the honor to perform for. From the very first note to the last encore, these wonderful fans sang every chorus, reached out to touch us and applauded with great fanfare. We played on the bill with several other Japanese acts, some of the names escape me, but one of the names was Mother’s Milk. Not only are the fans absolutely wonderful in their constant praise, but all of the musicians are as well. During our show, I spotted several of the other members of the bands standing right in the front row yelling the loudest.
We sold all of our CD’s at last night’s show, so any of you who were lucky enough to get one, please enjoy it with my greatest humble thanks.
As some of you may know, our tour started at nu things on Wednesday night. Where we had another great audience as well as an awesome opening act from Japan called Bright Act
As I’m writing this, it’s starting to look like an Alfred Hitchcock script, in that I am jumping around from day to day not necessarily in order, so I will keep up the confusion and tell you about another audience we played for last night. Deep in the heart of the American Umeda section of Osaka, is an American owned soul food / blues venue, called Savannah. As some of you may know, I recently finished producing my new jazz record called Musical Chairs with my alter ego, Lucky Henry. We managed to go play a short set for a very appreciative audience hungry for American music.
That’s all for now, as I’ve got to go change strings on both guitars I brought, back up the live recordings we’ve done at each show and get some much needed sleep. Enjoy the pictures.

News Update:

Rehearsals are winding down for the upcoming Unstoppable Tour of Japan (October 17-26). All I can say is it's gonna be a lot of fun. The band is as tight a pickle jar lid. Long Neck Jimmy (my strat) is ready be played and has been telling the other guitars in the flight case to step aside and watch a veteran Fender make some noise!

Oh Yeah!!!

These guys from Pittsburgh won the first game of the 06 NFL season last night!

There is no secret that I love the Steelers and have been a fan since I was a kid in PA.

I got so excited last night I couldn't sleep after the game...LOL!!! What am I gonna do to get some sleep after the game next Monday night?

Today I caught a fish! He said his name was Mr. Limpit and he sounded like Don Knotts! Actually, I took my youngest son and my 75 year old father fishing today (Labor Day) and I did catch a fish, a small speckled trout which I promptly threw back in,(my first in years). What a Labor Day! Seeing my dad and my son fishing together, very COOL! I think I will head back to the studio and get out of the sun now!

Things have been really busy around here for the past six weeks. The Lucky Henry CD Musical Chairs was very exhausting to complete. It is off to the guru of mastering, Jim Laforest at AudioVista for polishing, waxing and that new-car smell.

The kids have all started back to school which creates the need for parental homework oversight..LOL!

We got lucky with Tropical Storm Ernesto not entering the Gulf of Mexico (we don't need any more storms thank you).

Sneak Preview

Have you ever started on a project with the best of intentions and have it take WAY more time than you originally planned?

Not unlike painting your house or weeding the yard, the upcoming Lucky Henry CD Musical Chairs took hundreds of hours to get from start to finish(over a period of two years I might ad).

Not only did I write all the songs (many with input from Donnie Morgan and Greg Roth), I also played guitar and keyboards as well as produced and edited this project! Aghh!

I am very happy to announce that Musical Chairs is off to be mastered and will be available within 60 days (in time for the holidays)! It is a powerful record full of tight jazz/rock fusion numbers, traditional guitar jazz and maybe even a couple that will become standards someday (you might hear these on the Weather Channel or in an elevator ..LOL)!

After the upcoming Unstoppable World Tour in October, the radar is set for preproduction on the next Sounding Rick record with my buddy and musical guru Kasim Sulton. BTW, if you can make it, go check out one of his remaining solo shows. You can find dates at www.kasiminfo.com .

One Step Closer

Tonight we wrapped up work on Gwen McCrae and the Craettes' vocals for the TK Records release to benefit the Lighthouse for The Blind.
She is a soul queen with a major history in American music! Luckily for us her tour to France was postponed and she was able to bring her wonderful daughters Leah and Sophie in to make the backgrounds even better. Talent does run in the family...
Now that this is finished, next on the radar is the Lucky Henry record. I hope you all pick this one up when it is released. It is really cool!

An Evening With the Queen

Gwen McCrae "Queen Of the Rare Groove" came in with her two daughters Sophia and Leah to cut background parts for music legend Henry Stone. You may remember Henry, he's the guy who signed Ray Charles and James Brown to their first two record deals in the 50's. He then went on to start TK Records which had one of the best rosters of soul artists like Sam & Dave, Gwen McCrae, George McCrae, KC and the Sunshine Band, Clarence Carter and more. Gwen had a #1 hit with "Rocking Chair" in the 70's. If schedules work out, look for Gwen and her daughters (the 'Craettes') to provide some soulful backgrounds

on the next Sounding Rick record. Oh, and if you're in Paris next week, be sure to catch Gwen's show ! She is a sweetheart!

First Japan Shows Scheduled

Hello Japanese fans!

I am excited to announce that the Sounding Rick Unstoppable Tour will be playing Sun Hall in Osaka on October 19th and Urban Square in Kobe on October 22nd!

We will be performing as a power trio with Donnie Morgan on drums and Jim Laberge on bass. This high-energy lineup is going to be fun to see!

Bring your friends with you as we will be recording these shows for an upcoming live album and DVD!
